Acute Care Research – Clinical Research Professionals

Latest News

Acute Care Research (ACR) Series kicked off with UC’s Heart, Lung, Vascular Institute (HLVI) Lunch & Learn: The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) presented by ACR-CRP Advisory Committee member, Becky Ingledue, CCRC. “Becky is our first volunteer to present in this series. Her passion and enthusiasm for research is contagious!” says Stephanie Schuckman, host of the series and Senior Training Specialist for the Acute Care Research Council (ACRC). Becky chose Henrietta Lacks since ethics and empathy are hallmarks for participants and healthcare professionals to better understand each other’s view about human research. Empathy is the #1 competency for CRPs in the ACR environment, as identified by the ACRC. Positive evaluations concur: “For a first go around, I think the presentation was great! We discussed as a group the main components in research that are imperative to continuously re-educate those conducting informed consent. Ethics and empathy.”

Angela Molloy represented acute care research at The Community Leaders Institute (CLI). Congratulations to Angela Molloy, RN, BSN, CCRC, Clinical Research Project Manager, UC Neurology and Rehab Medicine, for her recent graduation of The Community Leaders Institute! Thanks Angie for representing ACRC and inspiring the creation of an adult research participant advisory council (RPAC) at UC Health, planned for 2019. CLI is an eight-session leadership development training program offered by CCTST to help community partners and AHC colleagues gain skills in program evaluation, clinical research, and network with other community agencies/practices. Acute Care Research Competencies abstract goes to Washington! We are delighted that the abstract Acute Care Research Competencies for Clinical Research Professionals: A Practitioner Inquiry Approach and Assessment was presented as a Poster at  the April Translational Science 2018 in Washington, D.C. View poster handout here.

ACR - CRP Overview

The Acute Care Research – Clinical Regulatory Professionals (ACR-CRP) is a high impact collaboration of clinical research professionals in the acute care setting within Cincinnati’s Academic Health Center (AHC). Formed in 2017 by the Acute Care Research Council (ACRC), this group supports ACRC’s mission - which includes improving the efficiency of the research process, and, training our next generation clinical and translational researcher.

Acute Care Clinical Research Professionals are challenged by the:

  • Need to interface with patients 24/7, within minutes to hours of their illness or injury
  • Inability to schedule/recruit patients via traditional means
  • Frequent inability to direct-consent patients due to patient care and family considerations that surround a catastrophic health event
  • Movement of patients throughout the health care system (EMS, ED, Surgery, ICU)

Today, the Acute Care Research – Clinical Research Professionals group is committed to sharing resources and best practices to eliminate system barriers to the acceleration of clinical & translational research in the acute care setting. Through a common focus on the standardization of training/career development programs, maximizing economies of scale and coordination of research activities, an innovative ACR culture is being formed that will be more impactful and encompassing than that which any institution could create individually.

ACR – CRP Strategies 2018-2019

  • Implement ACR training for acute care stakeholders
    • Implement  mentoring program/workshops
    • Design ACR Certificate and Training for CRP’s & PI’s
    • Offer model/metrics to other CTSA’s
  • Increase Community Engagement and Education Outreach to public in ACR
    • Build adult UC/H Research Participant Advisory Council
    • Craft public education research outreach to grow trust, increase study recruitment and enrollment

The Acute Care Research – Clinical Research Professionals group is open to all clinical research professionals in acute care units in the collective academic health centers of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, UC Health, and the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Member Benefits

  • Streamlined administrative and regulatory processes – Access to shared regulatory and process documents, participation in review development, and a process to promote the implementation of evidence-based best practices
  • Networking – Expansion of acute care research professional networking through a forum where shared knowledge leads to creative problem-solving, enhanced productivity and measureable quality improvements
